Every morning Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am - 12 pm, volunteers assist patrons in need of vision assistance over the phone. Using the MDR database, volunteers look up/record patient information and coordinate with outside offices to best serve those in need. The responsibilities of this position also include answering questions, returning voicemails, and making reminder calls so that patrons are well-informed about resources available to them. For anyone interested in health, skilled with computers/phones, or simply looking for a way to connect people to the help they need, this role tends to be extremely rewarding.
Because it involves more extensive training, this is considered a long-term position.
Reception, order clerks & Pre-Screening
Whenever clinics occur at Skyline rather than an outside office, the program depends on volunteers who can assist in signing patrons in as they arrive to be seen. It can make a world of difference for someone coming in for an exam to be greeted by a friendly face, which can dramatically help them feel more comfortable. Someone with lots of patience and who enjoys spending time with people of all backgrounds and personalities would be perfect for this essential job. This can be a once a month occurrence or something to do more often, depending on the volunteer's preferences. Times/dates of clinics vary; the Skyline calendar includes details of on-site clinics.
On Wednesday mornings, during the optician's visit, order clerks are needed to help assist patrons as they select and pay for their glasses order.
The Eye Clinic is also in need of volunteers willing to help conduct a brief pre-screening process for patrons before they are seen by the visiting doctor. Patients get their eyes tested with an auto-refractor and tonometer before the exam, and training for this can be provided with no past experience required.
The Eye Clinic program would not be possible without doctors who donate their time every month to see patients from Skyline for free, basic eye exams. The volunteer is welcome to determine when the session takes place, whether they will conduct exams at Skyline or at their own office and how many people they will see. Every day the phones at Skyline ring with requests for vision assistance, but our agency can only help so many people. Last year over 1,300 exams were given through Skyline's services. Donate only a few hours of your time a month and we can help even more Oklahomans regain their sight.
