Help patrons dress for success
Young people and adults alike enjoy volunteering in the Clothing Closet, as it offers a chance to see the direct impact of donations on people's lives in a way that we do not always think about. Often patrons spend time in this area while waiting to receive groceries, so it is a great way for volunteers to understand that the need in Skyline's target community surpasses food and at the same time help to fulfill this need with their own hard work.
Just as receiving food or new glasses can deeply affect someone's life as they struggle with poverty, being able to purchase a new pair of shoes or outfit can be just as empowering and inspiring. Volunteers understandably take pleasure in assisting people through this experience.
Because the Clothing Closet hours often align with the Food Resource Center, big groups of volunteers usually cover both these programs simultaneously. The Clothing Closet tends to be a bit more relaxed, with jobs such as removing empty hangers from racks, organizing clothes and helping bag people's purchases, so that little volunteers can participate as well.
In this way volunteers with physical restrictions may also find ways to contribute, by pairing up socks or even working the cash register. However there are also tasks such as unloading/weighing donations, sorting through donations to confirm they are in good condition to be put out, organizing items and carrying them for patrons who can't.
